Residents raised the issue during a community meeting at the Marlin Coast Community Centre last week, attended by Mayor Amy Eden, Division 8 Councillor Rhonda Coghlan and Division 9 Councillor Brett Olds.

The meeting addressed concerns about increasing traffic volumes associated with recent residential development, proposed commercial development and school traffic around Reed Road, Navigation Drive and Smithfield Village Drive.

In a statement to Cairns Local News, a council spokeswoman said long-term infrastructure planning currently identified a signalised intersection upgrade for 2036, but that timeframe was now under review.

“In addition to the previously referenced accessible pedestrian median crossing, council is planning further improvements for the Reed Road and Navigation Drive intersection,” she said.

“Existing infrastructure planning identifies a future signalised intersection upgrade in 2036, based on long-term growth and future traffic demands. Council is currently reviewing that timing in light of changing road user needs and conditions.

“In the short term, council is investigating upgrades to the existing roundabout to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists while maintaining efficient traffic movements, including during school drop-off and pick-up times.

“These improvements will be considered alongside the need to deliver value for money for ratepayers, with timeframes for any additional works to be confirmed as planning progresses.”

Council had previously announced an accessible pedestrian median crossing for the south-western approach of the Reed Road intersection, with construction scheduled for the 2026-27 financial year.

At last week’s meeting, residents expressed concern that pedestrian infrastructure was not keeping pace with growth in Trinity Park and the surrounding northern beaches suburbs.

Issues raised included pedestrian safety around Holy Cross School.
