Rangers in match of their history against Townsville
MARLIN Coast Rangers Football Club will host the biggest match in its 79-year history this Saturday (April 26), when the Cairns-based club’s FQPL men’s side takes on Townsville’s MA Olympic in the northern regional final of the 2025 Kappa Queensland Cup.
The high-stakes showdown will take place at Pennell Field, Trinity Beach, with kick-off at 6pm, and is the furthest Marlin Coast Rangers has ever progressed in the competition.
The winner will advance to the final regional qualifying round and keep alive their chances of representing Queensland in the prestigious Australia Cup – alongside A-League clubs and the best teams from across Australia.
To mark the occasion and encourage a huge home crowd, the club has announced that entry to the match will be completely free.
Club president Mike Fitzroy said the occasion was a milestone moment for Marlin Coast Rangers. “This is the biggest match we’ve ever played in,” he said.
“To be just three wins away from the national stage of the Australia Cup is massive – not just for the club, but for the Cairns football community.
“We want everyone from the northern beaches and beyond to come down, bring their families and help create an unforgettable atmosphere.”
Marlin Coast Rangers earned their place in the regional final after a thrilling 6-0 victory over Southside Comets in the previous round.
Their opponents, MA Olympic, are travelling from Townsville and are expected to bring strong competition.
“This group of players and coaching staff have worked incredibly hard to get here,” Mr Fitzroy said.
“We know they’ll give everything, and with a big crowd behind them, who knows how far we can go.”
