Kuranda Range road works delayed
THE Kuranda Range road will have to be closed for three full nights later than expected after severe wet weather last Monday night (April 15) impacted the schedule for night works.
A Transport and Main Roads statement said the nights would likely be in late April or early May 2024 with the exact dates dependent on the weather and supply of materials.
“These works need to be carried out to ensure the road remains safe for single lane traffic and avoid a full closure, which would result in long-term significant disruptions,” the statement said.
“The emergency works are taking longer than expected due to the recent wet weather, specialist supply issues and challenging site conditions,” he said.
“These unforeseen circumstances resulted in changes to the design due to the emergent nature of the works and subsequent extensions in the work schedule.”
TMR acting district director Darryl Jones said the works could only be done in dry conditions.
“Safety is our number one priority. The crew needs dry weather conditions to complete the works,” he said.
“When the dates for the three remaining nights are known, we will advise road users.
“I’d like to thank road users for their patience while we carry out these important works."
The statement said no works were scheduled on the range road until the night closures and the road would be open, road conditions permitting, with single lane sections in place.
It said TMR was planning long-term solutions for repair and recovery works to the damaged road network, including the Kuranda Range Road.
“Once a program of works is finalised, TMR will advise the community of the expected construction timeframes and traffic arrangements for the works,” it said.
“The current works have also been designed to assist in the constructability of the long-term works. The start date of the long-term works is likely to be several months away.”
