JCU’s interactive AI new space
JAMES Cook University has launched the Cairns Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub, connecting researchers and innovators in the Far North to a network of similar centres across the state.
The launch last week was attended by JCU researchers, local community and business leaders, and the founders of FNQ-based AI start-ups.
The state-wide AI network, an initiative of Advance Queensland, aims to promote and expand the state’s artificial intelligence capability.
“Artificial Intelligence is a game changer, with the potential to automate less meaningful work, and to create new jobs and new industries,” keynote speaker and JCU’s chief digital officer Geoff Purcell said.
“With that potential comes great responsibility, to develop ethical and responsible AI systems that align with our values,” he said.
JCU’s innovation facilitator Samantha Horseman said Cairns community and business leaders attending the launch heard about how artificial intelligence research could lead to new jobs, new industries, and smarter ways of getting things done in regional Queensland.
Projects showcased included a driving simulator, developed by local innovator Demelza Werly, which uses virtual reality and biofeedback loops to help users practise and test their on-road skills.
Data science students also demonstrated an emotion tracking system with potential to assess customer experience and satisfaction, based on recognition of facial expressions.
