Rare hail hits Cairns southern suburbs
HAIL is being reported in the southern suburbs of Cairns as a thunderstorm sweeps across the city this afternoon.
One resident has filmed it at Edmonton. Facebook went viral with comments and images. On Weather IQ it shows as pink on the radar signature.
“Amazing for Cairns itself,” its Facebook post says.
North Queensland Aero Club said on Facebook: ”Wild weather in the region this afternoon. Hail in the southern suburbs of Cairns (as shown in the radar showing black colouration over Edmonton). And a gusting 30knot southerly wind now at the airport in Cairns.
On Facebook Brad Carr reports hail at Mount Sheridan of 1-2 cm.
Gordon Greaves said there was also hail at Bentley Park … “45mm rain in 15 minutes, and noisier than you could believe. Came straight over the top of us”.
John John said it was also at Woree.
Sharyn Hauff: “Definitely hail in it, was driving into it from Cairns to Edmonton, road was flooded into my place too, never happened before”.
Andrew Lee: “Nearly 60km/h wind gusts, and so many very close lightning strikes and heavy rain in Gordonvale. My brother in Edmonton just messaged me saying it was hailing there”.
Kim Daysh: “Hail at Bentley Park. I risked running out in the storm to get some. About the size of small cherries.”
Laura Hart: “Wild, it was wild, and hail also. I’m located in Edmonton so was a direct hit.
Janelle Massingham: “My partner at home at Edmonton said we are having hail never have we had this before and lived here all my life.”
Al Ackerly: “It did at Mt Sheridan along Hardy Rd into Bicentennial Rd. Just drove through it … roughly pea size.”
